Tournament Tradition
Inglewood – The MagnetARENA FOR ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST GOLF ASSOCIATION IS REAL TEST By Alex C. Rose The last word in golf course architecture. That’s what those in attendance at the annual championship tournament of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association will feast their eyes on when they gaze upon the eighteen holes of the Inglewood Country Club in Seattle, which will be the testing ground for this year’s major event during the week of June 17th. What a transformation has been performed on that layout during the past few months. Inglewoodians always boasted that theirs was the best there was in golf courses in the Northwest. They were proud of their course. They had every reason to be. But the Inglewood course has just become a finished article! Wide and well-kept fairways and putting areas were alright, but Inglewood lacked something. That “something” was well-placed and well-built traps and bunkers. Inglewood now has them – in quality and quantity. It was the writer’s pleasure to play over the course a few weeks ago – we feel guilty in having to admit that it was our first round over Inglewood for several months – and we herewith extend our compliments to Architect A. Vernon Macan, Professional Walter Pursey, Greens-keeper, Sydney Cowan, Dr. C.B. Ford, Ted Knudson and all others who had a “hand in the job” for their excellent work in putting the finishing touches on the Inglewood picture. En route from the first tee to the home green one finds many changes, but it is the beautifully contoured and well-placed traps and bunkers that catch the eye – and the errant shot. Yours truly had plenty of both on that round. Inglewood NOW has a championship golf course that compares with any in the country. The player who places his shot will not find trouble, bout the badly-placed shot will. While the traps and bunkers are easy to get into, they are not hard to get out of. The day of the deep bunker, with the overhanging face is a thing of the past. Thank goodness, say all of us. You’re going to enthuse when you see the Inglewood course all dolled-up for the annual championship test of the Northwest next month. And you’re going to enthuse some more if this happens to be your first to the spacious and elegantly furnished clubhouse of the Inglewood Country Club. The clubhouse and golf course of the Inglewood Country Club is a combination that would be hard to beat, anywhere.
